CAQ Wins in Quebec Provincial Election

The Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) won a majority government in last night’s Quebec provincial election.

As part of their platform, the CAQ called for reducing the quota of immigrants allowed into Quebec by 20% from approximately 50,000 to 40,000. The CAQ have vowed to do this within their first year in office.

They have also called on having a mandatory French language examination and Quebec values test for all new immigrants three years after their arrival. The CAQ have explained that a failure of such tests could lead to the revocation of the immigrant's Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ).

The CAQ have also indicated that they want to provide better support to new immigrants by helping with job searches, and providing more funding for training, including paying immigrants to take language courses.
