Changes to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program

On November 1, 2018, the Government of Alberta announced some changes to the Alberta Opportunity Stream under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) effective immediately.

Specifically, the Government of Alberta removed the minimum income requirement for all candidates and adjusted the official language proficiency requirement as follows:

- The official language proficiency requirement for candidates working in NOC Skill Level C and D occupations will not increase from CLB 4.0 as previously planned; and

- The official language proficiency requirement for candidates working in NOC Skill Level 0, A, and B occupations will increase from CLB 4.0 to CLB 5.0 on January 1, 2020 which is six months later than previously planned.

These changes should make it easier for temporary foreign workers in Alberta to meet the eligibility criteria under the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

dRN Law LLP fully supports these changes as the AINP is often the only way in which low-wage temporary foreign workers in Alberta can transition to permanent residence.
